One place to play games

Streaming has really revolutionized how we consume media. Before, you had to get physical copies of the media that you want for you to enjoy them. This is true for movies, music, TV shows, and games. Nowadays, however, online-streaming platforms have eliminated that necessity for most media. Movies and TV shows can be streamed on Netflix while miscellaneous videos can be streamed on YouTube. On the other hand, Spotify and Soundcloud are the go-to streaming sites for music. Google is now trying to do it for gaming with Stadia.

What is Stadia and cloud gaming?

Cloud gaming is not a new service, and quite a few major players in the gaming industry have tried their hand at it like Sony with their PlayStation Now and Microsoft with their Project xCloud. It offers users an online gaming experience without the need to purchase physical copies of games.

Stadia is Google’s very own cloud-gaming service. In October 2018, it was released as a closed beta with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as the test game. During development, the utility was named Project Stream.

What It Offers

Stadia allows users to stream video games online through Google’s various data centers. With Stadia, not only can users play games without physical copies, but they can also play them without having to download the games to their storage. Stadia supports high-quality gaming as it can stream video games in 4K resolution with 60 frames per second. Additionally, it is expected to improve to be able to support video game streaming at 8K resolution with 120 frames per second. Stadia also supports high-dynamic-range videos which allow for clearer and more vibrant videos.

According to Google, Stadia supports HID class USB controllers. However, Stadia will also have its own controller that has a direct link to the data centers via Wi-Fi. Using Stadia’s unique controller will reduce input latency during gameplay. As fellow Google-owned platforms, players can also use Stadia to stream their gameplay to YouTube. In conjunction with the YouTube streaming integration, Stadia also has the “state share” feature which allows users to use the save states of streamers when launching games in Stadia.

Revolutionize Gaming and Streaming

Cloud gaming may not be a new service, but right now, it’s still extremely limited. Stadia has the potential to revolutionize gaming by making it easy and accessible to everyone in the same way that YouTube or Netflix has done for videos and movies, respectively. Thanks to it's focus on streaming and community, Stadia will surely bring more and more gamers closer than ever before. With Stadia, players will have one place to gather, interact, and play games with other people.
